Top Tips to Drive Readers to Your Nonprofit Blog

Blog expert BL Ochman blogs on blogging and other online communications techniques and, in a post earlier this week, she pointed me to Search Engine Journal’s advice on promoting your nonprofit blog. You would be amazed how many questions I get from nonprofit communicators on how to develop their blogs. But very few are focused on ensuring that target audiences read the blogs.

C’mon people. We found out with our first websites that you have to promote your site to your audiences, and give them reasons to visit on an ongoing basis. The paradigm’s a bit different here (tools like RSS and email feeds can push blog posts to your readers if they subscribe) but the point remains the same. Promotion is everything.

Here are Search Engine Journal’s top methods of driving readers to your blog, drawn from :

  • Include your keywords in blog post headlines
  • Optimize the template. Make sure post titles appear in the title tag and append the title tag (hard code) with the most important phrase for your blog. Example:
    "50 Ways To Write a T-Shirt Slogan – Search Engine Journal"
    Search Engine Journal is included on every blog post title tag automatically
  • Use the blog post title as the permalink
  • Make useful comments on other blogs
  • Offer automatic feeds of new posts to readers via email and RSS feeders
  • Ping the major RSS feed and blog search engines (Technorati rules at this point) each time you post
  • Submit your blog to RSS and blog directories such as the Nonprofit Blog Exchange.
